Why do people leave the interior design industry? For the past decade or so, there has been an ever-expanding gap in the current workforce with 5-10 years of industry experience. While we know from previous research that the current gap had multiple contributing factors, one of which being the Great Recession, we also realize there are other reasons needing to be addressed. Starting the conversation about these factors sooner rather than later could prevent the gap from growing, especially as the current pandemic we’re facing could play a similar role as the Recession in a future loss of industry members. Focusing our conversation specially on why women are leaving the industry, we want to understand why they’re changing paths and where they’re going. Why is our career sector making it impossible to stay while other industries are providing seemingly endless opportunities? We plan to survey and interview designers currently in the field, those who have left to work in another sector of the field, and those who left entirely. We want to shed light on this problem and explore potential avenues for improvement. Session Recording
